The Gamebadges project has launched a Competence Map for the European game industry. The Map highlights competences needed in different game industry roles in three expertise levels. Bronze level competence goals highlight the competences of juniors and graduating game students, silver level covers most of the independent professional level, and gold level is reserved for the gurus of the industry. Combining different roles and expertise levels creates a unique combination and ensures that this Competence Map is beneficial for game developers in different stages of their careers – from junior to senior, from game students to career changers.
The Competence Map has been created in close cooperation with game educators and game industry professionals. The creation journey included workshops in game industry events, interviews with both educators and professionals, and surveys. As the Competence Map is now launched and available online for anyone interested, everyone can explore different game industry roles and the skills required in the field. Juniors and seniors can find insights on how to get to the next expertise level.
The Gamebadges project is also creating an Open Badge ecosystem, where individuals can apply for badges and have their skills recognised within a standardised framework. The first tests of this ecosystem have started, and will continue throughout the year.
“We wanted to create a standardised framework of titles and competences for game development-related professions”, says Saija Heinonen, project manager of Gamebadges. “The Competence Map and the Open Badge ecosystem we are building have great potential to support the matchmaking between talents and the industry. They also help game educators by highlighting competences needed in different game industry roles for students.”
Gamebadges unites nine project partners and over 20 associated partners from nine countries. The project is co-funded by the European Union. Launching this Competence Map for the European game industry would not have been possible without this funding.
